Carbon Steel: Properties, Production, Examples and Applications

Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy, which contains up to 2.1 wt.% carbon. For carbon steels, there is no minimum specified content of other alloying elements, however, they often contain manganese. The maximum manganese, silicon and copper content should be less than 1.65 wt.%, 0.6 wt.% and 0.6 wt.%, respectively.

   Product Details

   Production Process

Raw material smelting: Iron ore and coke are smelted in blast furnaces to generate molten iron, and then the composition is adjusted by converter/electric furnace steelmaking.

Refining and continuous casting: Molten steel is refined and purified by RH/LF and then continuously cast into slabs.

Rolling processing: After the surface of the slab is cleaned and straightened, it is hot rolled (high temperature) or cold rolled (normal temperature) to form, and descaling is required during the process.

Post-processing: Some products require heat treatment (quenching/annealing), and then undergo flaw detection, shot blasting, cutting, and flattening processes.

Finished product inspection: The final product is strictly inspected and marked and packaged before leaving the factory.
